Nuuk, also known as Godthåb, is the capital of Greenland and the largest port city and the location of the local administrative region government. Nuuk has an area of 105,000 square kilometers and is located at 64°10′N latitude and 51°43′W longitude. In Danish and Norwegian, it is called Godthåb, meaning beautiful hope. Danes living here are used to calling this city Godthåb. After the implementation of local autonomy in 1979, the official name of this city is Nuuk in Greenlandic.
Nuuk is located at the mouth of Godthåb Strait on the west coast of Greenland and has a tundra climate. The average temperature in July is 7°C, and the average temperature in January is -8°C. Greenland University, a higher education institution on Greenland, is located in Nuuk City. The university has four departments: administration (teaching economics, law, and subjects related to business, management and public administration), culture and social history, Greenlandic language and literature and theology. Nuuk City implements nine-year free compulsory education. Most of the teaching languages are Greenlandic, but students also need to learn Danish. Students will go to Denmark for further studies when they grow up.
Denmark has a Greenland Command in Nuuk City, which is responsible for fishing area patrols, sea rescues, and meteorological services for residents. The United States also has a military base in Nuuk City.
